Recently, I got an email from someone. It’s actually only the third email I’ve gotten about Descendants and so, even though it was a complaint, I was sort of giddy to get it. Now, surely, I’m not going to do with with every email, but I think maybe many people may be wondering the same thing the person sending me that email was wondering:
Why do I slow things down with stories like Ahead/Behind or Summer Session?
The answer is under the cutIn theory, I could just write Descendants as a straight action series and still have plenty of character development. I think I could, at least. but the reason I do issues like Another Kind of Homecoming and to a lesser extent, Psalm for a Soul, is thatDescendants isn’t a striaght action series. It has and has always been about the lives of the members of the Descendants group.
And thier lives have quiet, emotional situations as well as the action packed, violence filled moments. It’s not raining supervillains in Mayfield, no matter how they characters feel at times. It’s really, I feel, required to tell the whole story.
Plus, without those stories, the plot doens’t move right. Without the original zero action story, From There to Here, we wouldn’t have met these characters or known what was happening. Another Kind of Homecoming introduced Tammy Kane, and so on and so forth.
So I’m asking you, gentle reader, to have faith. I know that many of you read Descendants for the superheroics that some of the drama introduced in these kinds of stories may not be your cup of tea, but I wouldn’t be showing you this part of the story if it wans’t important to the overall narrative. Who knows? You might find yourself re-reading one of the those stories one day because that’s where you favorite Descendants-verse character got thier start.
